“You should have let me shoot him.”
Malik idly picked at the broken nails on her left hand and made no reply.
“Really, nothing says don’t fucking touch me like having your shit-for-brains skull ventilated on the bulkhead."
Clicking the damaged covers off her finger ends one at a time she carefully placed them into a vial on the console next to her seat. “If you had done that then we would both be dead now….his associates would have spread us across the hanger just to make a point.”
“You fight like a girl you know? What was with the lame bitch slap? Basic training shows you how to drop a guy that size…..one good kick with those heels and he’d have been down on his knees no messing.”
Malik made a couple of motions over her datapad and watched as the clear coat on the broken nail covers reverted to a liquid form. “You say that likes its some kind of insult.” She chided. “He’s a dead man walking now…at least my way gets us clear before the unpleasantness starts” She lifted her hand carefully to her face and gave the swollen cut to her lip a gentle prod “and this was worth it if his information proves true.”
“Kitty got claws….but he needed shooting for that though.”
A narrow draw opened silently next to Malik from which she removed a small case of fresh nail extensions, this time in a vivid green colour.
“Why do you risk going to those places?”
She opened the case and began to methodically replace the nails on her left hand.
“You have the money, you could pay people, even a lot of people, to do the searching for you.”
“The fewer people I involve the lower the risks for us all.”
“What risks? Your immortal now, we should just burn them.”
Malik paused for a second “Too many other people would get hurt in the cross fire. I can’t do that, not even to them….and you know I have enough trouble sleeping as it is.”
“I would do it in a heartbeat.”
“I know you would” Malik murmured. “And that truly frightens me….its why it’s taken me this long to seek you out.”
“I wondered when you would finally come looking for me again.”
“I’ve always known how to find you. It’s just….they would never have let me through the academy and onto the capsuleer program if you had been around, you know that don’t you?”
“Ignoring me all that time was unkind.”
Starring ahead at nothing Malik replied “They told me I had to stop seeing you, that it would help me recover if you stayed away….that I could not keep looking to you for help.”
“You would never have survived if it had not been for me.”
“I’m glad you’re here. Malik sighed. “I don’t think I would have the strength to do what I’m going to have to do without you.”
A finger gently traced the scar across her face. “I do what needs to be done….its fun sometimes you know, to just let go and embrace the blackness….to do the things you tell yourself you’d never resort to. I could tell you our secrets and things now forgotten…how you got that scar….even what I did to the person who gave it to you….”
Malik sank further into the command chair of her ship. “I….I don’t want to know…and you promised never to tell” she whispered.
“Shhh, don’t fret. Perhaps it not time to open the box. The role of Pandora can wait for another day.”
Leaning forward to replace the now empty case, Malik gave an involuntary shudder before refocusing. “I just need to find out what that Caldari sacuyaj is looking for, and to ensure I get to my Father before they do. There are some questions daddy dearest really needs to answer. Quietly though, I’d prefer not to draw their attention towards the rest of my family nor have them join the Angels and Serpentis on my list of enemies.”
“You’re not very good at the whole vengeance thing you know. You should let me take the lead….we can start back at the last station with those guys associates….”
“Going back there puts us at unnecessary risk, and torturing those men won’t achieve anything.”
“But slaughtering corporation members of the Serpentis will? Tsk tsk double standards dear.”
Frowning to herself Malik mused “At this point only the Serpentis know the truth behind any ties with my family, and that agent suggested someone high up would know more…. Plus you did say this was the best way of attracting that kind of person’s attention quickly.”
“You will never be sated you know….it's never going to be enough.”

A warning light brought Malik’s attention back to the helm display. The sounds of the distress message filtered into her ears as she sadly regarded the scorched remains of the transport convoy and its human wreckage revolving slowly through the dark.
A wing of Vigilant cruisers approached the destruction. Alone, suspended in her pod, Malik keyed up the attack vector and stirred the engines into life. With her cloak active and launchers reloaded Scarab began to close the distance on her targets.
A murderous smile spread across her face as she allowed a part of herself slip away again, safe from the horror about to unfurl. “Time to play” she purred. “Let’s see if any of these ones survive long enough to answer some questions shall we?”
