Ok, I'm putting this up because I was caught out by this and i think people who are new may also get caught out by it.
Drone Control Range does not mean the distance between the drone and you ship.
the fact is, if the drone is on your grid, then it is in range to be activated.

Drone Control range is the distance between your ship and the target you want the drones to attack, and it has nothing to do on where you drones are compared to you, as long as you remain on the same grid as your drone.

Actual drone control ranges:

You start the game with a base 20km range

Each lvl of scout drone operation will add 5km range for a max of 45km range

Each lvl of electronic warfare drone interfacing will add 3km for a max of 60km

Drone link modules can add to this.
